About me & the website
A quick update dated 31st July 2011!
I have actually got round to modifying the theme for this site and have re-instated my graphical header. As you can see the image is much larger than the default logo so I had to spend a few minutes re-aligning the menu bar and at the same time I decided to change the background colour.
After months of tinkering with Joomla as my content management system I have decided to revert to my favourite Gallery installation.
The daunting task now is to sift through all of the photos that I have re-uploaded and add titles, descriptions and tags to make searching easier.
I have just downloaded and installed a Facebook plugin for the gallery so that people can log in to Facebook and leave comments.
In the old Gallery version 2 there was a handy add-on that allowed you to put shortcuts to albums in other albums, so over the next few days (which will end up being weeks or months!) I am planning on looking at the Gallery 2 module and seeing if it can be integrated in to Gallery 3 - I will advise on my findings soon! (My reasoning for wanting this is because I would like to like, for example 'Hardwick Old Hall' in my English Heritage album to 'Hardwick Hall' in my National Trust album).
I have also made some adjustments to the 'About Page' module to make a links page - basically I opened the package in DreamWeaver and just changed the word 'About' to 'Links' and uploaded and hey presto a quick and easy links page!
I have installed a few other add-ons to my gallery allowing users to 'like' on Facebook, to view the EXIF data from my photos and a nice looking cloud tag so you can search by keywords which I will be slowly adding to all of my photos over time. I recently tried a little module that displays a calendar with links to photos taken on that day, but its not very clear on what its offered (it it just displays a page with a calendar on and will show years where there are no photos taken etc) so unit I get the time to write some instructions abd make it more user friendly the module will be disabled (there is potential there for it to be very useful).
Finally, on the Gallery front, I have installed a nifty little module and theme that alters how the gallery is viewed when accessed by certain mobile devices (currently due to the limitations of the module it will only identify apple mobile products and display a 'iphone' style photo gallery but I'd like to make improvements to that module also!).
A word of warning to people out there - think twice before signing up to a hosting package from UK2.net - their automatic installers for packages are flawed (after trying several different 'auto' installers I still had to spend hours of time communicating with customer support and re-writing php code and changing permissions which were incorrect I still had problems) and one package which was titled as being a pro package turned out to actually be a limited time trial with required hundreds of pounds to continue using it!
A bit about me.
I am Robert from The Midlands, United Kingdom and my passions are photography, CSI, gardening, history. This is my place to show off some of my photos and tinker about with other stuff (online shop, online family tree).
For security reasons website links are not clickable on the gallery pages. Clickable links can be found on the 'Links' page.
